What is a “Champion”?

Your Role as a Champion

As a Champion for the New Jersey Chapter of the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, we as the board rely on you to be the advocate, communicator, and liaison between the NJ Higher Education institutions community and us as the board. You will be our main point of contact to share information, foster engagement, and most importantly, allow us the ability to create a feedback loop of what the community wants to see, and what we can offer as the Chapter’s Board of Directors.

Champions are HR professionals who value CUPA-HR NJ and want to support the active participation and engagement of the NJ community.

The NJ Chapter relies on you to connect the Board of Directors to the people of the community, you will spread awareness of what CUPA-HR is and the membership standing of your institution (non-member or member), educate your community on the importance of professional development and how CUPA-HR can be a valuable resource and tool, encourage engagement and participation in all CUPA-HR NJ chapter events, and be a resource for your community to ask questions, provide feedback and express what they want to see.

Champions are our on-site experts and the driving force for increased participation and overall engagement of our NJ member institutions HR professionals; you are influencers for the CUPA-HR NJ Chapter. As a Champion, you’re both an advocate and ambassador.

 Responsibilities of a Champion

  • Attend NJ Chapter in person conferences and virtual events
  • Participate in Board of Directors meetings on an as needed basis.
  • Spread information to your own institution about Chapter events and initiatives
  • You are the pipeline for future Board members, we rely on you to connect your community with CUPA HR-NJ and educate on what the Board does to promote future board members.
  • Assist during in person conferences at our welcome/registration tables

  Some ideas for cultivating engagement as a Champion

  • Spread the word about upcoming events with your HR team! Make a Flyer to hang in your break room, send calendar invites for the dates of conferences, or ask to add it to the agenda of regular staff meetings
  • If you have connections with other HR professionals who work in higher education, see if their institution is a member of CUPA-HR, NJ chapter, if not, educate them about what CUPA-HR is and the perks of membership; so they may be able to bring it to their institution.
  • Encourage colleagues to also become Champions.

 Requirement to become a Champion

  • Be an HR professional and employee from a member institution

  Benefits / Perks of Being a Champion

  • Awareness of what the Board of Directors of the NJ Chapter does, creating a relationship and to be considered for future board open positions.
  • Networking with outside institutions and HR professionals from across the state
  • Ability to provide feedback and recommendations for future NJ Chapter events and conferences (topics, locations, food, etc.)
  • The ability to participate in select Board of Director meetings

 Overview of the 2024-2025 CUPA-HR NJ Program

 We’re Growing Exceptional Human Resource Professionals in the Garden State!

On behalf of the CUPA-HR New Jersey Chapter Board of Directors, we are thrilled to welcome you to the year ahead. We are excited to share some of our plans as we begin the 2024-25 season. We will once again be offering four in-person, half-day conferences and look forward to continuing the momentum that all of you contributed to at the end of last year. Additional details are forthcoming. Jersey Strong is alive and well at CUPA-HR!

Save the Dates! All conferences take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

 What’s in store for 2024

  • Wisdom Wednesdays: We are looking to offer two to four virtual one-hour sessions in between our in-person events that will occur on the third Wednesday of the corresponding months. If you have a specific topic that you would like us to explore, or an idea that you would like to share, please feel free to email us at [email protected].
    • Hosted on the 3rd Wednesday of the month noted from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
      • November 20th – VALOUR – Veterans’ Agility, Leveraging Outreach Understanding & Resources
      • January 15th
      • April 16th
      • June 18th
    • CUPA-NJ Champions: We would like to begin a program for our membership to get more directly involved in supporting, growing and elevating our chapter. We are looking for a volunteer from each of our state’s institutions to serve as “Champions.” More details to follow shortly from Nicole Klein, our chapter’s membership director.
    • CUPA-NJ Cares: This is a new initiative that will provide an opportunity for our attendees to give back to our conference host institutions and their communities.
      • At each event, we will be asking those attending to bring a nominal donation:
        • October: a non-perishable food item for the host institution or local community food bank
        • December: a new toy for a Toy’s 4 Tot’s Drive
        • February: gently used professional attire for a Hire Attire drive, for upcoming graduates’ interview preparation
      • All as a thank you to the institution for serving us as the host for the day
