Crowdsource Your Challenges with Michigan CUPA-HR

Session Description: Even a good life comes with challenges, including the ups and downs of work and personal life that affect everyone. This session highlighted how even high-performing individuals, such as Simone Biles, have faced mental health challenges—referencing her decision to withdraw from the 2020 Olympics due to emotional strain and her subsequent return to competition. The discussion also reflected on the broader impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring how mental health challenges affect individuals across all roles and environments. In many cases, HR professionals find themselves informally stepping into a “campus psychologist” role in response.
Participants explored strategies for addressing the stigma of mental health in the workplace and its impact on HR, along with effective approaches to supporting employees facing mental health challenges. The session also covered coaching managers to navigate mental health concerns within their teams, making appropriate referrals to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), ensuring privacy, and utilizing available resources.
