If you have topics for webinars or ideas for remote enabled gatherings please let us know at

We’d like to thank you for your continued support not only of your institution but also of your HR colleagues across Wisconsin.

Wisconsin Is On Its Way!

Greetings CUPA-HR Wisconsin Chapter Members,

A few weeks ago, the Wisconsin Chapter board members had the opportunity to attend the Association Leadership Program (ALP) hosted by CUPA-HR at the CUPA-HR National Headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee. This was the 70th anniversary of CUPA-HR so having the program held in Knoxville was especially relevant.

The ALP is intended to help chapters share information, coordinate with Regional members, and learn about the resources made available to them by CUPA-HR. The opportunity to attend the conference as an entire board was a significant building block for the revitalization of the Wisconsin CUPA-HR chapter.

Additionally, Shenita Brokenburr, Sr. Associate Vice President of Human Resources at UW-System Administration, was selected to attend the program as an emerging leader. The process to be selected as an emerging leader is very competitive and highly selective. Having Shenita selected as an emerging leader is a huge accomplishment and reflects the high quality of talent we possess in higher education human resources in our state. Congratulations, Shenita!

At the ALP, the Wisconsin board met the first day of arrival to continue planning future events, including a change management webinar. We are working on the details of that webinar now and are trying to secure a date in September. We will be sure to send out more information about this webinar in the coming month.

We are also looking forward to hosting two other webinars, in early December and then early January. The first, to focus on another topic that affects HR professionals – conflict management. The January topic will focus on the resources available on the CUPA-HR website, such as the Learning Framework. Our long-term goals are to arrange face-to-face meetings, seminars and conferences.

The ALP conference highlighted that the challenges facing the Wisconsin chapter exist in all chapters. The Regional boards are eager to help the state chapters in an effort to build stronger communications so each state has been partnered with a Regional board member. Their goal is to engage the state chapter and assist them in the planning and development of future events and membership engagement. Our Regional board contact is Dave Jones, from Purdue University, who is currently the Chair Elect for the Midwest Regional board. Dave has been in contact with us several times and has been extremely helpful in getting us moving in the right direction.

Coming soon will be a vote on the chapter bylaws. CUPA National has asked all chapters to have uniform bylaws and presented a draft of the bylaws at the ALP. Members who have signed up through the WI CUPA-HR website will receive and email regarding ratification of the chapter bylaws in mid-August. If you are not a member and want to be a part of WI CUPA-HR please go to the website and subscribe.

We will continue to engage our chapter members through the listserv, e-mail blasts from the National Office, and through our webpage (http://chapters.cupahr.org/wi/).

Please feel free to reach out to any of your board members with ideas, suggestions or questions you have regarding the CUPA-HR Wisconsin Chapter. We are here to serve you and welcome any input you many offer that will enhance the level of resources, professional development and connection opportunities available to you through the chapter.

Best regards,

— WI Chapter Board

The entire board was able to attend the Association Leadership Program July 13-16 at the National Office Headquarters’ city of Knoxville, TN. The ALP program is intended to help chapters share information and learn about resources available to HR professionals in higher education. This was the 70th anniversary of CUPA-HR so having the program held in Knoxville was especially relevant. We were able to visit the headquarters’ office the last day of the program. A few notes from this meeting and future events are listed below:

  • As a board, we met to discuss a webinar on Change Management. We are working on the details of that webinar now and are trying to secure a date in September.
  • The chapter is considering two other webinars, one in early December and then early January. The first to focus on another topic that affects HR professionals – conflict management and the January topic to focus on the resources available on the CUPA site such as the Learning Framework.
  • The ALP conference highlighted that the challenges facing the Wisconsin Chapter exist in all chapters, the regional boards are eager to help the state chapters in an effort to build stronger communications. Wisconsin’s regional board contact is Dave Jones, from Purdue University who is currently the Chair Elect for the Midwest Regional Board. A number of chapters are looking to move away from the once per year meeting. Some suggested options were: having a conference at two different locations in your State to cut down on travel time; combining with a neighboring chapter such as Minnesota or Illinois. Additionally, we heard about an example in Florida where they are having the same conference in three locations at the same time.
