CUPA-HR Southern California Chapter

Thank you to all who attended the SoCal Chapter Virtual Fall Conference

October 28, 2021 | 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. PT

Bio: David Lester represents and advises private employers on a variety of labor relations, corporate, and litigation matters including class action wage and hour, trade secrets and unfair competition, sexual harassment and sexual battery, disability discrimination and family leave, wrongful termination, workplace violence injunctions, personal service agreements, layoffs, sale and purchases of business, and fair debt collection practices. Mr. Lester has served as lead counsel on a variety of litigation matters and has prevailed on a number of jury trials, appeals, and arbitrations.

Presentation Overview: Mr. Lester will be providing a mid-year update on new laws, new cases, and new human resource challenges facing Universities and Colleges.  He will specifically focus on the challenges of going back to work in person, which will include a healthy dose of Covid-19 issues that are still plaguing employers.  He will attempt to guide employers on best practices going forward in these ever changing times.

Bio: Ryan Lathrum is a Diversity and Inclusion leader with over 10 years of experience. Ryan is the Global Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Spin, a micro-mobility company based in San Francisco. Prior to joining Spin, Ryan was the Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Wunderkind, a martech start-up based in New York City. Ryan’s passion for and commitment to Diversity and Inclusion work is personal. He is a cis-gender white gay man. While Ryan recognizes his identity carries a lot of privilege in certain spaces, his goal is to always use that privilege to uplift and bring others with him. Ryan’s ability to be an advocate for employees while providing strategic insight for leadership has allowed him to create impactful, and sustainable DEI initiatives. The past 18 months has taught Ryan patience, a deeper sense of empathy, and the importance of calling people into difficult conversations. Ryan also loves wine, food (mainly his husband's Sunday dinner creations and anything he makes from his homeland of Ghana), trying new cocktail creations, his family (Ryan is obviously the favorite uncle), and doing his best to stay in shape.

Presentation Overview: We do not call ourselves allies until the group or persons we are trying to ally ourselves to call us an ally.  Allyship is not self-defined.  This is a life-long journey full of immense growth and challenges.  On our allyship journey's, we can all be better by leading with empathy. In fact, 86% of people reported being able to navigate their work and life with an empathetic leader (Van Bommel, T. 2021). Together we will explore what it means to be an ally, what allyship can feel like, and how empathy impacts all of this.
