Employee Engagement

An interactive presentation meant to clarify what “engagement” is (looks like) and provide some tools to help employees become more engaged in the workplace.

Presenter – Alice Bergman, M.A. Cascade Center EAP .  Alice Bergman earned her Masters degree in International Management from the University of Texas at Dallas and a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University. She has experience as a Human Resource Professional and Career Counselor. Alice has had over 15 yrs in the Human Resource field as both a generalist and as a recruiter. She is a certified MBTI trainer. She is currently a Senior Consultant at Cascade Center EAP. She provides counseling to individuals and family, consultations to managers and supervisors, conflict resolutions and on site training on a variety of topics.

Dear Colleague: You are Now Responsible for Title IX Compliance.  * Title IX Harassment Compliance Obligations and Strategies to Reduce Title IX Exposure and Risks

Last April Title IX jumped in the spotlight when the Office of Civil Rights issued a “Dear Colleague Letter” describing obligations of colleges and universities with respect to sexual violence on campus.  This session will include a discussion of:

  • Institutional responsibility for addressing harassment under Title IX
  • The intersection between student-on-student harassment and employment issues
  •  Why Human Resources is a logical resource for institutional support in the Title IX arena
  • Key legal and practical issues arising out of the Dear Colleague Letter

Presenter – Michael Porter is a partner in the employment law and labor relations and education law practice groups at Miller Nash, LLP Attorneys at Law. Since 2000, Mike has worked with public and private employers in all areas of labor and employment law. He regularly defends wage-and-hour class-actions, employment discrimination claims, and constitutional claims asserted against public entities. Mike represents employers dealing with traditional labor issues, ranging from negotiating with unions, arbitrating grievances, and representing employers in matters involving the National Labor Relations Act and the Oregon Public Employee Collective Bargaining Act. Mike also provides advice and counsel on these and other employment, labor, and education law issues. Mike’s practice also focuses on serving public school districts, private schools, and higher education institutions on issues involving employment, including tenure issues, student rights and discipline, education programs, and federal and state regulatory compliance.

Presenter – Carol Mercer, Sibson Consulting

Develop a common understanding of “total rewards” and compensation program design.

  • Gain an understanding of the importance of a total rewards strategy
  • Develop an awareness of the full range of compensation concepts, what is applicable and what is prevalent to different employee segments
  • Learn how to develop a compensation philosophy
  • Learn how to develop to develop competitive

Ms. Mercer joined The Segal Company in 2005 as a Compensation Consultant and has since been promoted to a Senior Compensation Consultant. She was also named a Vice President in 2007. Her primary roles include managing projects and supervising compensation analysts for Segal’s Public Sector Compensation and Bargaining Practice (PSCBP). She also serves as a member of the Higher Education market team.

As a project manager, Ms. Mercer deals directly with clients. In this capacity, she conducts kickoff meetings, facilitates meetings to build strategic compensation philosophies, conducts meetings where draft materials and final products are reviewed and approved, and presents final reports/presentations to client boards and councils. Some of her larger, current clients include the City of Carrollton, TX, City of Chattanooga, TN, and Portland Community College.

Presenter – Troy Strass MBA, PHR. Troy  is the Director of Human Resources at Pacific University and has 15 years experience in business and human resources. He has been involved in: transportation, manufacturing, technology industries, Non-Profit, and Higher Education as a human resources professional, both in the private and public sectors.  Troy graduated with honors from Portland State University with a double BS in Human Resources Management and Business Management as well as National Honor Society member of Phi Alpha Theta. He is certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR), and a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and completed his MBA at Willamette University in 2009.

Presenter –  Pamela Moore is the founder of Compass Human Resources, a consulting firm focused on providing personalized human resource services to growing businesses.  She has 25+ years of human resource generalist experience in a wide range of industries.  Her areas of expertise include everything from tools and systems to long-range strategic planning.

Pamela has a long-standing partnership with WSC Insurance.  Together, they offer benefit and service packages that allow their clients to take a proactive approach to risk management.

In addition to being a certified HR professional, Pamela also holds a degree in Accounting, which gives her a unique perspective on her clients’ businesses.

Leadership Styles for Effective Employee Relations

This workshop is designed for managers who are either new to their roles, or who moved into their roles with little formal preparation to lead others.  Getting the most and best from your team requires choosing a leadership style that fits each person.

Participants will work through employee relations scenarios and decide which management style will get the best results from their team members.  They will discover the pros and cons of different management styles, and how to use them intentionally.

Learning objectives:

  •  Understand the roles a leader plays in the workplace
  •  Understand the different management styles
  •  Understand how employee skills and attitude affect the style you use
