Ann Sherman, President

Ann Sherman is the Director of Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Officer for Northern Michigan University.  She is an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist whose dissertation was on “Trust in Management and the Impact on Organizational Change”.  Her 20 years of HR experience has focused on creating effective partnerships which address strategic planning, executive and leadership development, talent management, selection system design, and organizational development.

Prior to joining NMU, Ann held executive positions in the medical devices, automotive, and utilities industries, working on quality and regulatory affairs, business process improvements, mergers and acquisitions, change management, and technology integration.  She has also taught at Wayne State University.  Ann has conducted numerous sessions on HR issues, including invited presentations on Strategic Compensation, Employee Communications, Facilitating Change, Win/Win Negotiations, and HR Roles:  Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor.

Lori Mulder, Past President

Lori L. Mulder is the Director of Human Resources at Hope College since 2000.  Prior to 2000, she worked for the Business Services Office at Hope College.  She is a member of SHRM, The Lakeshore HR Association, and received her SPHR certification in 2005. She holds a B.A. from Hope College in Management and will complete her Masters Degree in Human Resources Development from Indiana State University in December 2010.  In May of 2008, she participated in a published roundtable discussion for University Business Magazine, representing private liberal arts colleges. One particular area of HR interest is that of Wellness and she has presented at several West Michigan wellness initiatives.


Deborah K. Apsley, Secretary

School of Information, University of Michigan

Deborah K. Apsley is director of human resources and business affairs for the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She oversees all employment, human resource and labor relation matters. She is responsible for facilities and building operations and in charge of administrative affairs and business operations for the School.  Before joining the School of Information, she worked for the Department of Psychology and the Institute for Social Research. She has been with the University of Michigan since August 1984. She has a B.S. in law from Eastern Michigan University and is currently enrolled in a graduate program in human resource management at EMU. She is a member of SHRM and received her PHR certification in 2003.

Most notable accomplishments include serving as an editorial assistant for the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin-special issue. She was also the managing editor for a University of Michigan journal publication called Peers and Preventions: A Journal of Undergraduate Peer Helping Research. She is also the co-editor of a book with Dr. John A. Bargh entitled Unraveling the Complexities of Social Life: A Festschrift in Honor of Robert B. Zajonc (2001). Renee Hiller, Member-at-Large

Renee Hiller is the Director of Benefit Services for Michigan Technological University.  Her primary responsibility is in the delivery of employee benefit and wellness programs to the faculty and staff of Michigan Tech and serves as a member of the Michigan Technological University Benefits Liaison Group (BLG).  She has 12 years experience in human resources in both the corporate and higher education settings.  Renee is a member of SHRM and received her SPHR certification in June 2011.  Renee has her B.S.B.A in Human Resource Management from Central Michigan and a masters degree in Human Resource Development from the University of Illinois.
